The “Tohoku” area is the northeast region of Japan’s main island of Honshu. The area is primarily rural, agricultural land which has seen a significant proportion of its population go south to the large industrial cities in the last fifty years. The climate is harsher in winter than most of Japan leading to shorter growing seasons for farmers, a factor which contributes to relative poverty in the area.
