Michizane (845-903) was a scholar whose ability in Chinese literature and poetry writing set him apart and above the run-of-the-mill student. His ability propelled him up through the bureaucratic ranks until he was appointed to the second highest post in 899. Michizane placed himself in opposition to the powerful Fujiwara family and was exiled in 901 to Kyushu where he soon died. He was subsequently enshrined as a god of scholarship and is a popular focus for prayers among students facing examinations.
