Osaka is a large city located on the Pacific Ocean side of Japan approximately 320 miles (515 kilometers) west and south of Tokyo. Today, it is second only to the Tokyo metropolitan area in population, manufacturing industry and commerce. At the beginning of the Edo period, Osaka was the largest city in Japan with a well developed port, booming commerce, and industry. During the Edo period, it was the primary commercial center of Japan.
