Keisai Eisen (1790-1848) was a contemporary of Hiroshige, the wood block print artist. Eisen had a hand in many activities: he was a wood block print artist, playwright, and historian to name a few. In 1835 Eisen began the famous series of block prints, 69 Views of the Nakasendo which were eventually completed by Hiroshige. As Eisen only completed 24 of the prints it is Hiroshige’s name, not Eisen’s, that is most commonly remembered in connection with the 69 Views of the Nakasendo.
