Keio University in Tokyo was established by Fukuzawa Yukichi, a former samurai, who adopted liberal values and attitudes, especially toward commerce which he foresaw becoming increasingly important. Keio has become one of the best private universities and is particularly renowned for producing specialists in business and commerce and, to a lesser extent, foreign languages and international relations.
